Chicken Coop Materials
Choosing the best chicken coop materials starts with a chicken coop plan. While you are working on plans for a new coop, you can use some make do materials that will be alright for a temporary home for your chickens, but if you plan to raise birds for the long term, you will need a better home for them. The better the materials that you use for the building of the chicken coop, the less time you will spend repairing it or worse, chasing chickens who have escaped. Holes in the roof lead to wet feed, wet straw and sick or dead chickens.
Each type of material should be considered for its pros and cons –including how much it costs, how easy it is to work with and how long lasting it might be. You should also consider what the chicken coop will actually look like once it has been built.
If you choose a material that can be painted, for instance, then you could paint it the same color as the house, adding some trim or other touches to make it look good. Just because it is a chicken coop does not mean that it has to be ugly. In addition to the basic materials, you have to consider the other materials you will need which can include windows, fans and vents.
One of the most important features of the chicken coop will be the flooring. It has to be strong and sturdy but it also has to be easy to keep clean and tidy as well. Every day, there will be chickens in there and they will be doing all kinds of messy, smelly things, all things that have to be cleaned up frequently. If you have a treated wood floor, you can spray out the mess after you shovel up the bulk. If you go cheap and do not use the treated wood though, the floor will eventually splinter and wear through, needing to be replaced. A plastic composite floor might not be strong enough to be walked on when you need to come in to gather eggs or care for the chickens.
The comfort of the chickens should also be considered when you are choosing the materials to build their home. They need to be warm in the winter but cool in the summer months. If you are planning to raise the chickens for the eggs or to breed, they need to have the right temperature levels and the optimal health or they will not produce correctly. There are many things that need to be considered when you are getting ready to bring in the chickens, so always choose the right chicken coop materials.
